5 Big Habits That Hurt Your Skin
Reading Time: 3 minutes

A quality skin care routine can do wonders for your face. It can reduce wrinkles, soothe sores, minimize pores, and so much more. However, you may still notice some imperfections if you’re not making healthy choices outside of your skin care routine. There’s more to a flawless complexion than exfoliation and face masks. Read below to learn about some of the main habits that hurt your skin. Cut these out of your life, and you’ll be that much closer to a flawless face!

Using the Same Face Tools without Cleaning

Make sure that you stick to a specific cleaning schedule when it comes to the items that get up close and personal with your face. This goes for a lot of things—not just your makeup brushes, razors, and tweezers, but also your bedsheets and pillowcases. Clean anything that gets up close and personal with your face often; you should ideally wash your bedding once a week and clean your makeup brushes at least once a month. The more you clean these items, the less chance dirt and grime will come in direct contact with your face.

Not Drinking Enough Water

Put down the coffee mug—seriously. Caffeine, sugary drinks, and juices may taste good, but they do nothing for your face. Instead of picking up another cup of coffee, go for a glass of water instead. People have been saying for years that lots of water is imperative to good health, and that goes for skin as well. You’ll notice a difference even after just a week of getting the proper amount of water each day.

Drinking Too Much Alcohol

This one may seem obvious, but heavy drinking will do some major damage to your skin. What you may not know, is that even one or two glasses of wine can make an impact on your skin the next day. The effects of alcohol on the body are quite vast, ranging from your liver to your skin to your mental health. When you drink, your skin dries out, and for some people, they may notice more irritated or redder skin. Combat these rough skincare days by limiting your drinking and adding in as much water as possible.

Following a Poor Diet

If you stick to the inner aisles of the grocery store, then you’re probably limiting your diet too much. Your skin needs the nutrients from a variety of food groups; it needs fresh vegetables and fruit, legumes, (limited) dairy products, and so much more. If you’re sticking to processed foods in your diet, you’ll notice that you’re not only lethargic, but that your skin is battling against you as well. Make some healthy diet changes and your skin will thank you!

Exfoliating Too Much

This habit delves more into your skin care routine than any other lifestyle habits. If you exfoliate too much, you’ll end up stripping a lot of the nutrients and oils your skin needs to grow healthily. Limit the number of times you exfoliate in the month—you don’t need to do it every night.
