Moon milk – supposedly it can magically send you into a deep slumber – but does it work?
You may have seen it popping up all over your Pinterest or Instagram feeds, the all-natural miracle sleep cure sweeping the social media world, a modern take on a bedtime classic.
Moon milk seems to be everywhere lately. Warmed milk infused with herbs and spices, Moon Milk, has been preached as a miracle worker for helping you reach that deep, glorious, sleep to catch some much-needed z’s.
But does this glorified sleepy time latte live up to all the hype? Here is everything you need to know about Moon Milk.
What Is It?
Moon milk is a mixture of spices, herbs, and milk – all ingredients designated to help you sleep.
Supposedly, the concoction has roots in Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic healing system that has existed for centuries. However, a quick disclaimer: there is minimal medical or scientific evidence supporting most Ayurvedic principles. A few studies suggest that Ayurvedic methods may help reduce pain and increase function for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis and may also assist in managing symptoms in those with type 2 diabetes. However, most of the trials were small or not well-designed.

According to Maggie Moon, RS, RD. The drink is comparable to a similar warm milk beverage sometimes known as masala doodh, which typically contains almonds, turmeric, pistachios, black pepper, nutmeg, dried rose petals, and other herbs and spices.
Does It Work?
The short answer is yes and no.
Warm milk has been asleep aid used by moms for their children for years, and it is a technique used by many long into their adult years as well.
Dairy milk contains a sleep-inducing amino acid, although small amounts of it, called tryptophan. While warm milk before bedtime may help you drift off blissfully, it is more likely the habit of drinking a warm beverage that enables you to fall asleep.
The ashwagandha in moon milk, alternatively, may generate a relaxing effect on the body and mind. Additionally, the curcumin – an active ingredient in turmeric – possesses anti-inflammation properties which can create a sense of calm before going to bed. However, it is necessary to note that there is a relatively small amount of curcumin in turmeric.
Blends of moon milk commonly contain cinnamon, which is widely known for its antioxidant properties, as well as ginger, known for its anti-inflammatory effects.
All in all, if you enjoy having a warm, soothing beverage to calm you down before tucking in, moon milk may be a new creative addition to your bedtime routine. However, it is best not to assume that it will be enough to make you fall asleep on its own.
The best methods to ensure you drift off for a night of restful sleep are self-explanatory and straight forward. Avoid screens before bed, keep your sleeping area dark and cool, and, as much as possible, adhere to a consistent bedtime.
